Task Dependency

To access this screen:

  • Define at least two work package tasks. See Generate Work Packages/Tasks.

  • Drag between the predecessor task and successor task to form a dependency.

    The Task Dependency screen displays.

Task dependencies are an important aspect of work packages.

Note: When you create multiple dependencies, they are created in descending order and notin the order that the tasks were selected. If you want to change the order of the tasks, you may need a combination of sorting functions.

Note: When you create links interactively, the Type is 'remembered' between each dependency. If you define a dependency as Finish-Finish, the next dependency that you create will have a default Type of Finish-Finish.

Field Description
From The first task that you selected for linking.
To The last task that you selected for linking.
Type The type of link applied between the selected activities.

Select a valid value from the drop-down list. Valid values are:

  • Finish-Start - the successor task occurs when the predecessor task has been completed.
  • Finish-Finish - the predecessor task and the successor task are scheduled to complete at the same time.
  • Start-Start - the predecessor task starts at the same point in the schedule as the successor task.
  • Start-Finish - the successor task starts before the predecessor and finishes when the predecessor is scheduled to start.
  • Percent Overlap - the successor task lags the predecessor task by the percentage that you define in the Overlap field. The Overlap field is only displayed if this value is selected.
Lag Specifies the lag between the successor and the predecessor activities.

This field is not available if you select Percent Overlap.

Layer Specifies the Dependency Layer in which the link is placed. For more information, see Add a Dependency Layer.

When you specify a layer, you can:

  • Turn on and off the display of the links based on the layer.
  • Use or not use the links in the total schedule.
