Outcrop Mapping
The desktop Outcrop Mapper Tool gives you the ability to take images of vertical outcrops in the field and bring them into ArcGIS Pro. The images can be brought into a map scene as a flat image that can be annotated using ArcGIS Pro's feature classes. The image and it's feature class annotations can be sent to 3D to help populate your digital twin with your field observations. As the outcrop is displayed as a flat image it is not spatially perfect, but does give you the ability to see the geological context of how your field observations are held together.
The outcrop mapper tool needs the following attributes to position and scale an image:
- Capture Point X, Y and Z taken off a DTM
- Bearing the camera was pointing when the picture was taken
- Distance from the camera to the outcrop
- Reference object in the image of known size to scale the image
Before we begin importing outcrop images we need to set up an outcrop project.
The outcrop project needs to be set up to create a OutcropMapper.gdb file in which all the created files are stored. The project allows us to manage the outcrops we create and all the associated data in them.
