Barge and Service Trip Configuration

Despatching material by barge is known as a service trip, and encompasses the barge name, associated tug, the structure of the barge holds, barge route details, barge loading/unloading transactions, and all associated activities (for example, sampling).

Service trips can be created via the Barge Explorer or more usually via a service trip template.

All barges are associated with a barge transport class, based upon the maximum tonnage of the barge, which determines the number of samples to be taken when lot sampling is performed. When barges are defined, their barge transport class is assigned.

Tugs are never loaded, but are used for towing barges.

Barge Transport Classes

Barges are configured based on the maximum tonnage for each barge. The barge transport class defines the class, or range, of tonnage size of the type of barge. For each barge type, a default lot tonnage, used to determine the number of samples to be taken when barging lot sampling is performed, can be specified.

Barges

Barges are flat-bottomed boats for carrying cargo, and are usually pulled by tugs. Barges are used when defining service trip templates that are then used to create service trips when despatching material by barge. Each barge has a set number of holds that are used to store the transported material and act as a reference for the quality loaded onto the barge. All barges are associated with a barge transport class, based upon the maximum tonnage of the barge, which determines the number of samples to be taken when lot sampling is performed.

Barges are categorised into barge types. A barge must belong to a barge type.

Service Trip Templates

Service trip templates are used to create service trips for despatching material by barge.

A service trip template must specify the following information for service trips created from the template.

  • A barge route
  • Whether the template can be changed to a different service trip template

A service trip template may specify:

  • Default transport event templates for each route point
  • Costs and service charges from service or freight contracts
  • Which tabs display on the Service Trip

Service trip templates are categorised into service trip templates groups. A service trip template must belong to a service trip template group.
