Change the Template of a Shipment
This activity is only applicable to shipments created from a shipment template. The shipment template must have the Allow Template Modification setting enabled.
Changing the template of a shipment can change its route because the route is defined in the template. The template may define default loading or unloading information, and transport event templates specific to route points. The impact of changing the template, or even if changing the template is possible, depends on how much information has already been entered for the shipment.
For the following situations, 'loading or unloading information' refers to:
- Bulk transactions
- Discrete unit movements
- Certificates
- Opening surveys
Shipment templates may also define service charges:
- If service charges have been assigned to the shipment (either from the original template or manually), the service charges are retained.
- If the new template has service charges, these service charges are added to the shipment.
- If a service charge with the same base service contract, contract rates and locations is already on the shipment, it is not added again.
No loading or unloading information exists for any route point
If there is no loading or unloading information on any route point, the template can be changed to any other shipment template.
If a vessel has been assigned to the shipment, the vessel is retained, even if the new template has a different default vessel.
If the route in the new template has any loading route point that was also in the old route, other information is retained for those loading route point(s). This information includes route point times (ETA, ATA, and so on), transport events, loading plans and delays. If a loading route point that is retained has a different default transport event template in the new shipment template:
- Events with data are retained.
- Events without data are deleted.
- Events from the new shipment template's transport event template are added.
If the route in the new template has a different loading route point, there is an option to retain some information from the existing loading route point:
- If retained, the route plan, conditions, transport events and any delays of the existing loading route point are copied to the new loading route point.
- If not retained, the new loading route point has default information from the new template.
All information for other changed route points is deleted and replaced with default information from the new template for the new route points.
Loading information exists for one or more route points
If there is loading information on one or more route points, but no unloading information, the template can be changed to another template that has the same loading route point(s).
All information is retained for the loading route point(s). This information includes route point times (ETA, ATA, and so on), transport events, loading plans and delays. Loading information is also retained, including sample data for the transactions or discrete unit movements.
If a loading route point that is retained has a different default transport event template in the new shipment template:
- Events with data are retained.
- Events without data are deleted.
- Events from the new shipment template's transport event template are added.
All information for changed route points is deleted and replaced with default information from the new template for the new route points.
If a vessel has been assigned to the shipment, the vessel is retained, even if the new template has a different default vessel.
Loading and unloading information exists for multiple route points
If there is loading information on any loading point(s) and unloading information on any unloading point(s), then the shipment template cannot be changed.
