View and understand calculation traces

The Calculation Tracer trace output displays as a 'tree' with 'nodes' you can expand to view deeper layers of supporting calculations and inputs.

Calculation tags in the trace output are colour-coded as defined in the Calculation Types Legend.

Calculation Type

Colour Definition
Calculation Blue colour legend icon

Blue text is a calculation. Calculations in Production Accounting are no different to arithmetic calculations; for example, division or subtraction.

Link Aggregation

Purple text is a link aggregation from another logsheet. Link aggregations are necessary to propagate values from one logsheet to another. Several intermediate logsheets are automatically generated to improve the performance of the calculation engine.

Accumulation

Black text in bold font is an accumulation or data entry. Accumulations aggregate totals for a given period, such as the aggregation of the Total Plant Feed for a defined number of days to determine the Month total.

Slider

Green text is a slider.

For performance reasons, the default trace depth is usually set to 1, which means that the trace output initially loads one layer of supporting calculations or links. Likewise, when you expand the 'child' layers for a calculation tag, one additional layer displays.

The user interface and the right-click menu for calculation tags have options to view additional layers in the trace output.

Icon Name

Definition

Plus icon

Plus icon

Expand the details for a calculation tag, set or attribute.

Minus icon

Collapse the details for a calculation tag, set or attribute.

Expand children icon

Expand Children

Expand the next layer of supporting links and inputs for the calculation tag.

Note: A calculation tag may have many layers of supporting calculations and inputs. To find a specific value or calculation (for example, when troubleshooting) you may need to expand many child layers.

Expand Tree

Expand the output display tree.

The 'tree' is all the calculation tag layers that are loaded into the display (that is, either from the trace output initial load or that you displayed with Expand Children). For example, if you expand three child layers for a particular calculation tag, those layers are loaded into the output display. If you collapse the whole tree or the tree node, the previously loaded layers display again when you expand the tree or tree node. You do not need to select Expand Children again to display them.

Collapse Tree

Collapse the whole trace output. Only the top-level calculation tag displays.

Truncate to icon

Truncate To

Show the supporting links and inputs for the selected tag only. Other tags are removed from the output display. If you truncate to a specific tag, you can still use Expand Children to view its child layers.

Activity Steps

  1. To view the details of calculations deeper in the trace output:
    1. Click the plus icon next to any calculation tag, set or attribute.
    2. Right-click on a calculation tag and select Expand Children from the menu.
    3. Right-click on a calculation tag and select Expand Tree from the menu.

Note: Expanding the tree only displays layers that were previously loaded into the output display. If you select Expand Tree and the display does not change, try the Expand Children option instead.

  2. To view the details of a single calculation tag only, right-click on the calculation tag and select Truncate To from the menu.
  3. To display the original trace output again, click Run Trace.

Note: The term NaN may be in the trace output. NaN is an acronym for 'not a number' and implies that the value currently does not exist.
