Sharing Legends Between Projects
Legends fall into three categories:
System legends are required by the software in order to run, and are the default legends when all other legends are absent. They cannot be edited.
User legends are those in common use, and which a user may wish to use in more than one program or document. If a document is sent to another user, the user legends are not automatically included. If the legend must be accessible to a number of programs or documents, then a user legend should be used.
Project legends are saved as part of a project. If a project is sent to another user, the associated legends can be used by them. If a project is to be used by a number of users, and a consistent appearance is required, then the legends should be saved as project legends.
Sharing legend data can often be useful; you can set up a corporate standard legend for a particular domain, or simply support an investigation by highlighting potentially interesting or problematic data.
Note: In addition to the activities below, you can also share legend data with your project or project archive. If the legend is in project storage, it will be distributed alongside your project (and if an archive, loaded data).
To export legend data:
-
In the Legends Manager, locate the legend you want to export in the Available Legends list.
Note: You can export a legend of any type: system, user or project, although you can only import a user or project legend.
-
Right-click the legend to export and select Save Legend.
-
Enter a file name into the file browser (legends are always saved with an .elg extension).
To import legend data:
-
In the Legends Manager, right click either the top level User Legends or project folder in the Available Legends list.
-
Select Load Legend.
-
Locate a previously saved legend file (it will have an .elg extension).
-
Select Load.
The legend is imported to either user legends storage or the current project, depending on what you selected in the first step.
Note: You can also use the Load Legend button at the bottom of the screen to import a legend into either the user or project areas (depending on what is currently selected in the list above.
