Text Wizard - General File Structure (Import)

This screen is displayed when importing a text file from an external file, and is used to declare the general file structure of the file.

This screen is part of the Text Wizard.

When you have finished entering data on this screen, click Next to proceed to the next stage.

Field Details:

The following import options are available

Data Type: choose from Delimited or Fixed Width options:

  • If the Delimited option is selected, the next screen shown in this wizard is the Delimiter Details screen. This screen is used to define the character used to separate data items in the external text file.

  • If the Fixed Width option is selected, the following screen in this wizard is the Column Widths screen, used to define how data is separated into columns in the external file.

Comment String: comment strings are ignored during data import. Specify the leading character of comment strings in the external file by selecting this check box, and adding a character to the enabled field. If clear, all lines will be interpreted during data import.

Data Rows: You can determine the scope of the data import with the following options:

  • Start at Line: this mandatory property is used to determine at which point in the external file data is to be imported from. Use the spin buttons to increment/decrement the value, or enter a value directly into the field.

  • Stop at Line: if selected, this option allows you to specify a maximum line (in the external) file to limit the data import. All data after the specified line will be ignored.

  • Header Row: if your external text file contains header descriptions at a specific point, you can select this option and enter a line number into the corresponding field (or use the default, which reads header information from line 1).

  • Quotes for Strings: if alphanumeric information in your external file is contained within standard characters (e.g. single or double quotes), you can select this option and declare the character used to signify string content.

Preview of File...: this section of the window shows a read-only preview of the file to be loaded, and can be viewed to give you an indication of the options required in order to import the file successfully.
