extend-string ("ext")

See this command in the command table.

To access this command:

  • Edit ribbon >Edit > Extend.

  • Using the command line, enter "extend-string" and press ENTER.

  • Use the quick key combination "ext".

  • Display the Find Command screen, locate extend-string and click Run.

Command Overview

Extends a string by adding new points to its end point. Additional string points are added interactively or using the command line coordinate entry system. You can also perform a combination of interactive and command line entries, which could be useful to maintain a required gradient or target 3D location.

  • Left-click to place a point without snapping, and right-click to snap to data.

  • Data selection and snapping  honours the current data selection and snap settings.

  • The string is only extended from the last point - the end of the string.

  • To extend the string from the other end, use reverse-string (to reverse the string point order) before running this command.

Advanced Digitizing Controls

Enabled by default, this command is supported by advanced digitizing controls. To use standard digitising instead, display Project Settings > Points and Strings and clear Show advanced digitizing controls. When active, you can constrain your digitising behaviour to manage the length, gradient and azimuth of subsequent string segments.

See Advanced String Design.

Note: As a project setting, you must save your project to preserve this digitising mode between project sessions. The screen popup remembers its previous position.

Command steps:

  1. Run the command.

  2. Select the string to be extended.

  3. Digitize additional points or add command line coordinates.

Command Automation

You can automate by passing this command and parameters into oDmApp.ParseCommand(), using any COM-aware scripting language.

Note: For more information on scripting in Studio NPVS+, please refer to your Scripting Tutorial (Help > Scripting Tutorial).

Example Parameter String (JS):

oDmApp.ParseCommand("extend-string @point=100.0,200.0,0.0,1 @attribute=GRADE,2.5";

Where:

  • @point=100.0,200.0,0.0,1 is the ParsePointArguments: An @point group of 4 comma-delimited values: X, Y, Z, and nButton. X, Y, and Z are numeric world coordinate values. nButton is an integer parsed as part of @point input; 1 is left mouse button behaviour, 2 is middle mouse button behaviour, and 4 is right mouse button behaviour.

  • @attribute=GRADE,2.5 is the ParseAttributeArguments: An attribute assignment token parsed into strColumnName and Datum.

  • GRADE is the strColumnName: String value naming the attribute column.

  • 2.5 is the Datum: Typed attribute value parsed from the attribute token.
