Licensing - FAQs
What's what in terms of accessing functionality. Review Datamine's simpler licensing methodology here.
Can I use a Studio 3 license to run Studio RM, EM, OP or UG?
No. Current Studio products require a dedicated application license to access core functionality.
Can I use a Studio RM/EM/OP/UG license to run Studio 3?
No. Studio 3 and other Studio licenses are separate and cannot be interchanged.
Have all the modular licenses from Studio 3 been removed for the successor products such as RM, EM or OP?
Not quite, but almost. The strategy adopted for the "New Studio Family" was to greatly simplify the licensing mechanism so that a single application-level (core) license is needed to access all resource modelling and associated functionality previously available in Studio 3. A Studio RM license, for example, will grant you access to a large subset of the modules previously available as purchasable items under Studio 3, including all resource modelling functions. Studio EM contains core/shared functions plus those relating to exploration data management and analysis, whereas Studio OP and UG are similar, but are focussed more on the open pit and underground scheduling/design domains respectively.

Does this mean I can't run a command unrelated to resource modelling within Studio RM?
Not necessarily. Studio products use a single, application level license to permit access not only to specific domain functions (such as resource modelling or open pit design, for example) but also all associated design, structure, analysis and reporting functionality. In specific cases, say, where Studio RM is focussed on the needs of resource modelling and OP relates to open pit planning, functionality previously available as a purchasable option in Studio 3 is not available within Studio RM. If you are concerned that this may affect you, please contact your local Datamine representative for advice.
Is a license in use for as long as I am running an application? Even if the system goes into hibernation?
A Datamine license is considered active if the application executable file is running, even if the system is in hibernation. You must close the application(s) on the client machine for the license to be released back to the server. In some cases, where a system has not exited cleanly, there will be a time delay between the application halting and the license being released. This can be controlled using the "Inactivity Timeout" property in the Datamine License Manager.
If I have a local license and a connection to a license server, which license will be used?
Your local system will always be checked for an installed license before any checks are made on remote servers. This ensures that server licenses are not utilized unnecessarily.
Does the Table Editor require a license to run?
No. Current versions of Datamine Table Editor are license-free.
If I uninstall my Datamine product with a license checked out from a remote server, what happens?
A product cannot be uninstalled if it is currently running. The act of closing down the application will release the license back to the server automatically. In rare circumstances, for example, where there are network problems preventing traffic between client and server, there will be a time delay between the application halting and the license being released. This can be controlled using the "Inactivity Timeout" property in the Datamine License Manager.
Can any machine be used as a license server?
Yes, but a Network license will be required on the host machine in order to broadcast more than one license per product.
Does Datamine License Manager run on Windows Server platforms?
Yes. Datamine License Manager will run on Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008r2 platforms.
Can the remote license manager run on a virtual machine?
Yes, but there is a specific mechanism for setting this up - you will need to discuss this with your Datamine office.
Can I rent/set up a subscription for Datamine products?
Yes, you can - please contact your local Datamine office for more information. Datamine offer a hosted license service for al clients.
How do I get access to a Summit portal?
In the first instance, contact your local Datamine support team who will be able to discuss options with you with regards to the level/type of cloud storage you require and which 'apps' you are interested in for data management, processing and/or reporting. You will then be able to connect to your Summit portal directly from Studio RM.
Can I restrict licenses or solutions to specific users or user groups?
Yes, but you need a special license to do it. The "Enterprise Server" license will enable the permissions model in all versions of License Manager from 4.24 upwards. This allows you to allocate licenses or solutions to one or more Active Directory users or user groups. Consult your License Manager online help for background information, and your local Datamine office with regards to acquiring a license.
Checked-out license—what is it?
Checking-out is the temporary transference of a license from one computer to another. The license will be locked on the donor computer (server) as "checked out" for the selected period, while it will be usable on the client computer for that period. When the check-out period expires, the client license will expire, and the license will be reset to be usable on the server. This is ideal for people working with laptops, away from the office, where there is a risk of losing a dongle or other security device.
Why can't I see the licenses on the License Server from my computer?
There could be several reasons:
- The network might not be working properly, or a local IT firewall policy is preventing access. Test with the "ping" command or contact your IT Administrator for guidance.
- The License Service might not be running on the server.
- The "Use remote server" selection may have been set up incorrectly by your License Server administrator.
- You may not have permission to see the licence(s) in question, as part of an Enterprise License setup
- The version of license services that is running on the server may not be compatible with the version running on the client machine - contact Datamine for support.
I keep getting an error message referring to C001, C002, C004 etc. Do I need an admin key?
Yes, all errors of the "C00x" type request an admin key to be registered before the software can be run again. You will need to contact your local Datamine support desk.
