Importing Strings

Adding string objects to your 3D window

Importing Strings

As with all types of 3D Data (points, strings, surfaces etc.), there are two main ways to import data:

  • Data can be imported from the current project (the imported object must exist in memory), or;

  • data can be imported using data source drivers, permitting the transfer of data held in files on your local system or network.

To import a string file

To import a string file into the 3D window, you will need to perform either of the following actions:

  • In the Sheets control bar (3D sub-folder), right-click on the Strings folder and choose Import.

    Polygons, polylines, strings, contours and drillholes are imported as string objects using the Data Source Drivers (DSD). A wide range of generic and third party data formats are supported by DSD.  Alignment strings are used by the 3D window as a guideline for mobile/simulation objects.

    The operation of each driver varies according to the driver selected and the contents of the source file. For instructions on the use of a specific driver, choose the Help button on the driver dialogs displayed. For more information about data source drivers see Using Data Source Drivers.

  • Right-click the Strings folder in the Sheets control bar, folder, and select Import from Project. Select the string object from the provided dialog and an instance of that object will be created in the 3D window. Note that each Datamine object can be represented any number of times in the 3D window. Although the link between the source object and 3D object is maintained, some disparity between items is possible (for example, the description of each object 'instance' is customizable).

    In this situation, the source object (i.e. the name of the physical Datamine file) will be visible in the String Properties dialog.

  • You can drag a file from Windows Explorer or Project Files control bar directly into the window to initiate the import process automatically.

The imported string will appear in the Strings folder. Click '+' to expand the folder. Double-click the object to display the String Properties dialog.
