Understanding How to Position Downhole Columns

Note: A Datamine eLearning course is available that covers functions described in this topic. Contact your local Datamine office for more details.

A downhole column is a representation of sample data, down a drillhole, which can have many format styles including text, columns, histograms and line graphs. Each drillhole can have any number of columns showing different sample data or different representations of the same sample data.

To extract the maximum benefit from this powerful interpretation tool it is important to understand how to position these columns with respect to one another and to the drillhole trace.

The settings described here apply to the currently active 3D window and all linked external windows. Independent windows will be unaffected.

The Order of the Columns

The downhole columns are parallel and ordered from left to right with respect to the drillhole trace, in accordance with the Columns in View listing in the Downhole Columns tab of the Format Display dialog (top is leftmost and bottom is rightmost). The Up and Down buttons should be used to put the columns in the most suitable order.

Positioning the Columns in Relation to the Drillhole Trace

The Position tab on the right side of the dialog is the mechanism for fixing how the columns will be positioned with respect to the drillhole trace.

If the automatic (default) setting is not satisfactory, the Automatic check box should be cleared to activate the Set relative to column: drop-down list. This should be used to select the column against which all the other columns will be aligned. The options in the Position of trace relative to column panel set whether the trace should run along the center, the left side or the right side of the selected column, and an offset can be applied if necessary.

All other columns are aligned with the selected column to the left or right depending upon their position in the Columns in View list.
