link-multiple-strings ("lms")

See this command in the command table.

To access this command:

  • Surfaces ribbon  >>Create >> Link Multiple >> Auto Link Multiple

  • Using the command line, enter "link-multiple-strings"

  • Use the quick key combination "lms".

  • Display the Find Command screen, locate link-multiple-strings and click Run.

Description

This command is used to create wireframe volumes by linking a sequence of perimeters (closed strings) in order (e.g. in the development of underground works), and can be used in many cases as an automatic method for creating bifurcated wireframes that, in the past, have given rise to a more complex procedure involving the design of tag (guide) strings (see trouser leg problem).

This method relies on the 3D Solid string linking algorithm.

  • If no selected strings are found, a message will be displayed, and the command will need to be restarted after the required strings have been selected.
  • The links take their colour from the first string of each string-pair used for the linking.
  • Tag strings can be used to control linking, see use-tag-switch.

The example below shows how perimeters and their relevant tag strings are selected prior to using this command. In this case, the upper mineralization zone perimeters (green 5) and tag strings (red 2) have been filtered (filter:COLOUR=2 OR COLOUR=5) before linking.

The perimeters and tag strings are filtered using filter-strings:

The upper zone perimeters and their relevant tag strings are selected i.e. only the upper two tag strings are selected:

The resultant closed wireframe volume has been generated using only the selected strings:

Use this linking method when:

  •  Joining a sequence of perimeters and generating end caps  e.g. a series of geological section perimeters or underground mining excavation profiles.

  • As a quicker alternative to using a combination of link-strings and end-link for generating a wireframe volume.

  • Creating a wireframe volume with bifurcated structures and with/without closed ends, with/without tag strings i.e. a typical trouser leg problem:

Note: This command uses the Maximum Segment Length value (if greater than zero), as specified in Wireframe Linking Settings to limit the generated segment length of generated wireframe triangles.

Command steps:

  1. In the Current Objects toolbar, select or create a new current wireframe object.

  2. Select all required perimeters and their relevant tag strings.

Note: In situations where filters have been used to display the required subset of strings and their tag strings, using e.g. the COLOUR attribute, additional but unwanted (for that linking run) tag strings may be displayed. In this case, the strings and only the relevant tag strings should be selected.

  3. Run the command.

  4. In the Link Multiple Strings screen, define the required settings, click OK.

  5. Check the wireframe against the strings.
