Total within-clusters sum of squares curve
A graph displaying the evolution of the Total within-clusters sum of squares (WSS) is also generated.
The WSS criterion measures the compactness of the clusters by calculating the sum of squared distances between each point and the centroid of its assigned cluster.
Lower WSS values indicate more compact clusters.
As the number of clusters increases, the WSS value generally decreases because points are grouped into smaller and more homogeneous clusters.
This graph helps evaluate how the clustering quality evolves as the number of clusters increases, by showing whether adding additional clusters significantly improves cluster compactness.
