Maintaining Composite Samples
Overview
When a composite sample is created, the component samples are selected and the composite sample subsequently made. After this event, the sample's component samples are updated if the wrong component samples were selected, or other component samples are added to the composite sample.
Process
Sometimes, it is a requirement of analysis that multiple samples are blended into one sample and the composite sample analysed.
Maintaining the Linked Samples of a Composite Sample
Composite samples are created from multiple samples in the CCREGN—Job application, and are then maintained like regular samples either from the CCREGN—Job or CCSAMP—Sample application, except that they have an additional Linked Samples tab to maintain the component samples comprising the composite sample can be maintained.
Composite samples can only be created for production and internal jobs.
Upon creating a composite sample:
- If Include Tests is Aggregate from all samples, then the unique set of tests registered on each component sample is registered on the composite sample.
- In the case a master sequel scheme has more than one precursor scheme, and one component sample has one of those precursor schemes and the sequel scheme registered on it, and another component sample has another of those precursor schemes and the sequel scheme registered on it, when a composite sample is created from the component samples, then the composite sample has both precursor schemes and the sequel scheme registered on it, and each sample scheme of the composite sample has its Precursor Scheme Code set from the first component sample scheme.

Sample Identification
Samples have three primary identifiers: Code, Sample Name and Client Sample Name.
Samples have three primary identifiers: Code, Sample Name and Client Sample Name.
A Sample Code is generated by the syntax that is in scope and has a Syntax Type of Other and a Syntax Code of SAMPLE_CODE_SYNTAX. If this syntax is not found, an error is returned. The syntax must produce a Sample Code that is unique within the organisation and contain valid characters.
If the CODEVALIDATION_SAMPLECODE application preference is defined and contains a list of visible ASCII characters, then the Sample Code must only contain characters from this list. If this preference is not defined, then the Sample Code must only contain characters from ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_0123456789. The Scope for this preference is usually set at laboratory level.
Each sample Code must be unique within the organisation for org-scope samples, and unique within the laboratory for lab-scope samples.
The Sample Name is generated by the syntax that is in scope and has a Syntax Type of Sample and a Syntax Code of SAMPLE_NAME_SYNTAX. If this syntax is not found, an error is returned. The syntax must produce a Sample Name that is unique within the job and contain valid characters.
If the CODEVALIDATION_SAMPLENAME application preference is defined and contains a list of visible ASCII characters, then the Sample Name must only contain characters from this list. If this preference is not defined, then the Sample Name must only contain characters from ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ_0123456789.
A common configuration is for the sample name to be generated by a concatenation of the Job Name + "." + a running sequence of numbers (001 onwards).
Using syntaxes to generate sample codes and names allows for automatic incrementing codification. Refer to Maintaining Sample Syntaxes.
Each Sample Name within a job should be unique, but this is not mandatory. The sample's Sample Name is generated using the destination job's sample count.
QC Assessment Details
When a composite sample is created, the composite sample's Primary Analytical Type is Unknown and the Secondary Analytical Type is N/A.
Other Sample Details
When a composite sample is created, it has defaults similar to when samples are created by Adding a Group of Samples to a Job.
The notes for the composite sample are editable. Typically, a note would comprise the percentage of the sample viz the composite, for example, the linked sample may comprise 50% of the composite sample.
