Maintaining Lines of Business

Overview

A line of business (LOB) is the arena in which a laboratory operates and classifies the industries service by the laboratory, for example, CTS (consumer testing), OGC (oil and gas) or MIN (mineral).

Examples of lines of business that some commercial laboratories include are:

  • Mining
  • Oil & Gas
  • Environmental
  • Agricultural
  • Consumer Testing

Each line of business might have different expectations on how a laboratory operates in terms of:

  • Responsibility and tracing of sample handling
  • Complexity in the testing and reporting
  • Complexity in the invoicing and charging
  • Security and auditing of data.

The lines of businesses are defined and associated with Schemes, Products and Price Codes via their attached schemes and analytes.

Lines of business are used to restrict the visibility of a user to org-scope schemes, products, biofields and price codes to just those applicable to the laboratory. For example, a minerals laboratory does not want information on how to test toys or agricultural products.

When a line of business is assigned to a laboratory, then users logged into that laboratory can see org-scope schemes, products and price codes based on that line of business.

Note: To see all available org-scope biofields, products, schemes or price codes, you need to create a laboratory (real or virtual) that has all possible LOBs assigned to it.

Process

Maintain lines of business

Lines of business are maintained using the CCLOFB—Line of Business application.

Lines of business returned from a search can be exported to a report. Refer to Generating Grid Reports. Available report templates are defined in the SEARCH_REPORT_CCLOFB application preference.

Lines of business are created at instance-level. An instance can contain multiple lines of business.

The line of business's Line of Business Code cannot be updated.

A line of business can be saved as another line of business.

Lines of business can only be deleted where they are not linked to a scheme, product or price code via their attached schemes and analytes.
