Timeouts

There are three timeout settings on the Options dialog, each performing a specific purpose:

Inactivity Timeout (Server setting)

This frees up server resources when there has been no activity from a client connection for the period defined. For example, when running a license server there may be a number of connections incoming from the client machines. This option forces those connections to be dropped after a period of inactivity - usually only needed if clients are not shutdown properly.

Broadcast Timeout (Client setting)

Only used when using the broadcast facility to locate remote servers. When broadcasting, the client posts a message to all other machines on the network and waits  for a response for the period of the timeout. On slow or large networks, this may need to be increased to pick up broadcast responses. On a slow network, typing in the machine name or IP address is usually more effective.

Network Timeout (Client setting)

This is the maximum period of time allowed for all client-to-server traffic. When requesting a list of licenses to be displayed in the license manager, requesting a license for an application or checking a license in/out etc, the client will attempt to create a connection with the server (which will time out if the connection is not made in this time) then it will post a request to the server and wait for a response (which will also time out if no response is made in this time). This should only need to be adjusted on slow networks, or on very busy servers.
