Datamine License Manager

All Datamine products and components require a license in order to run. The type of license required may depend on the product or component, and may affect their functionality. Some of the less complex products have a single “core component” license which must be licensed, whereas more complex products may comprise many components which must be licensed individually.

Important: Studio and other Datamine products automatically install License Services. Don't downgrade this installed version or your product will fail to operate. Upgrading the local installation, say, by installing a newer Studio product, is fine.

License Services enables users to manage their licenses in a coherent and flexible way by:

  • Providing users with a single licensing system for all Datamine products.

  • Permitting the licensing of many products with a single license key.

  • Displaying the status and properties of each license.

  • Allowing the simple transfer of licenses between desktop computers and laptops.

  • Enabling the control of software upgrades in accordance with purchased maintenance.

  • Supporting local network licensing with the ability to check licenses in and out from a server.

  • Supporting license security at a server, solution or license level.

What is License Services?

License Services provides running services administered by License Manager.

Operating Environments

License Services versions 5.7 and later offer three installation types, one of which must be selected at the start of the installation process of the standalone License Services package:

  • Public Cloud: selecting this option indicates that License Services server will be installed on a virtual machine accessible via the public Internet. This is targeted at and has been tested in V5.7 using the Microsoft® Azure® platform.

  • Private Cloud: selecting this option indicates that License Services will be installed on a virtual Azure platform that is accessible within a private network.

  • Physical: this indicates that License Services will be installed on physical PC hardware, or a virtual machine representing a physical machine on a private network. This option represents License Services functionality prior to Version 5.7.

More about operating environments...

License Manager

The License Manager is the configuration center for the Network License Server, and provides tools for registering licenses, viewing their status and properties, and checking them in and out from license servers.

It can be launched from the desktop icon, or from the icon in the Windows Tool Tray.

License Manager as a Server

A "Network License server" can be installed on any machine, making the licenses on that machine available to other machines on the local network.

It only needs to be running in order to make licenses on that machine available to others - for day-to-day product usage, the server is not required to be running locally.

There are three modes of operation for License Services, regardless of the environment in which it was installed:

  • Desktop
  • Department
  • Enterprise

On installation, Desktop mode is selected by default, and supports one license per product.
If more licenses are required, then the server must be configured as a Department, or Enterprise Server (see Setting up a Network Department Server).

License Locking

When a product or component is started, the computer searches for an available  license. If found, the product or component starts up, and the license is locked - preventing other users from using it. When the product or component is closed, the license becomes available again.

Checking Out a License

The facility to check out licenses allows users of laptop computers to run software while they are away from the office. Using the License Manager, a license can be checked out for a specific time period. This removes the license from the available pool, and ties it to the user until either the period expires, or it is checked back in.

Note: You should check out a license, if possible, when using remote license servers as it increases the performance of the license checking functions. This is because your installed application can check for license availability locally, without having to contact a server.

Solution Management

Purchasing the Solution Management option with your License Services implementation enables the full power of the License Manager to be exploited: it allows groups of software licenses to be created and managed as solutions to specific types of work - for example, geology or mining engineering.
