Set up a Network License Server
License Services servers must be able to 'see' client machines and vice versa. As such, all users connecting to the server must have permission to do so, and the port over which data traffic flows must be enabled for two traffic. Additionally, local or group policy rules, and antivirus and other defensive services must allow the License Services service to communicate over the network.
You can install any version of Datamine License Services on a server. Server-side installations are not subject to the minimum-version checks enforced by client-side Datamine Studio applications. However, you should periodically update your server installation to ensure the latest product definitions are available.
Important: All connection or network issues should be resolved before you proceed.
Note: You cannot run Datamine Studio applications on server platforms (however, License Services can be installed to a Windows workstation operating system. For dedicated license servers, License Services should be installed via a standalone installation package available from the Datamine Customer Portal.
Activity steps
-
Check your server for pending operating system updates and install them to ensure the latest security patches are applied.
-
Install the latest version of the License Services software on the machine designated as the Network License Server.
Note: A licensing server can be hosted on a physical machine to which client machines have access (e.g. as part of a private network) or a cloud-based machine (either private or public cloud). See Supported Environments.
-
Run License Manager as an Administrator on the server.
-
Obtain a Department License Server key from Datamine and install it before you install any other keys. This key will be secured to either a dongle or a Machine ID.
-
When you install the server key, you are asked if you want to automatically configure License Services to be a server. We recommend you select Yes. Doing so means you can skip the next step.
-
If you didn't choose to automatically do so, you'll need to manually configure the server:
-
Select Tools >> Options.
-
Select the License Service tab.
-
Change the Startup type to Automatic - this is important.
-
-
Select the General tab.
-
Set the Maximum number of days allowed for a check out.
Install product licenses on the server. Licenses are typically associated with a dongle number (which must be physically connected to the server, not via a pass-through configuration) or a Machine ID (Datamine's preferred license security option).
- Install Datamine software on the client computer(s). This will automatically install a client-ready version of a compatible License Services product.
- On each client PC:
- Launch License Manager as an Administrator.
- Tools >> Options >> Remote Servers Options.
- Configure a connection to the remote server. See Connect to a Remote Server.
- Click OK and make sure remote licenses appear on the main Licenses table. Can't see your server? See Server is not Visible from the Client Computer
- Close License Manager. Local configuration is complete.
