Setting up a Network License Server
-
Install the latest version of the License Services software on the machine designated as the Network License Server. A network server would be preferable if available.
A licensing server can be hosted on a physical machine to which client machines have access (e.g. as part of a private network) or a cloud-based machine (either private or public cloud). More about operating environments...Recommendation: install License Services as a standalone product, not as a component of another product.
-
Obtain a Network License Server key, and install it before you install any other keys.
Recommendation: a Network Server key should always be secured by a dongle, as should all product keys installed on the server for use on the network. If the server malfunctions or its hard drive fails, the dongle can be moved to another server, License Services and any relevant keys can then be installed on the new server, to allow you to continue working. A maintenance key would be required to move the server functions to another machine if any other form of security were used.
- Install product licenses on the server - if more than one license per product is needed, you must install a Network License Server license beforehand (see step 2). Licenses should be tied to a dongle number, and the dongle must be attached to the server. This allows any networked computer to use the license over the network, or check it out locally.

Checking-out a license is recommended on slow networks, and should be tried if problems are encountered using the license directly off the server. |

Do not stack dongles: if licenses on a single Network License Server are keyed against more than one dongle, it is preferable to switch all licenses to a single dongle using a maintenance key. Freed dongles must be returned to the Datamine supplier. |
- Install the software on the client computer(s).
- Configure the clients computers:
-
-
On each computer, open the License Manager, and select the Options dialog, Remote Servers tab.
-
Select Use Remote Servers.
-
Click Broadcast to view a server on the local network - this may not be successful if broadcasts are prohibited on the network. Alternatively, manually enter the machine name or IP address, and port number.
-
Example: for machine 'JOHNSPC' and port 43210 (default), enter:
JOHNSPC:43210 (or 111.222.333.444:43210 if you wish to use an IP address).

It is preferable to sue machine names are as they are less likely to change than IP addresses. |
