Maintaining Sample Biofields
Overview
A sample biofield is a field that exists irregularly on sample records, that is, the set of biofields can vary from sample to sample, and is used to store additional information for the sample.
A sample biofield is scoped by its parent sample. A sample can contain multiple sample biofields.
A sample biofield has a value and a flag to indicate its reportability. Sample biofields can be used in search criteria and placed on reports.
Process
Some sample biofields can be displayed in the samples grid for a job.
Otherwise, all biofields for a sample can be maintained on the Biofields tab in the CCSAMP—Sample application. Sample biofields are ordered as follows:
- CCBIOFIELDVAL.organisation_code
- CCBIOFIELDVAL.laboratory_code
- CCBIOFIELDVAL.job_code
- CCBIOFIELDVAL.sample_code
- CCBIOFIELDVAL.sequence_number
Biofields can be maintained on single samples or in a multiple sample update. Where multiple samples are updated, any added biofields are added to all samples in the multiple sample update, however, duplicate biofields are ignored, for example:
-
Sample1 and Sample2 have two biofields: "TRAIN" and "COLOUR".
Sample3 and Sample4 have one biofield: "COLOUR".
Where all samples are selected, then in a multiple sample update, the "TRAIN" and "COLOUR" biofields display as default biofield for all samples, however, the option exists to add the "TRAIN" biofield to all samples. If this is not done, but a new sample biofield that also links to "TRAIN" is added, then on submit, the outcome is that "TRAIN" is not added to Sample3 nor to Sample4.
This is because the drop-down is used to retrieve the biofield but the search does not retrieve the required details (ID) of that biofield since this is a duplicate of what already exists. This leads to the duplicate biofield not being added again to the grid. The biofield that exists, that is, the one that was originally added, is the biofield that is used—not the duplicate added biofield.
Upon maintaining sample biofields:
-
The event is audited.
Automatically Adding Biofields to Samples
A biofield is automatically added to a sample if the biofield is in scope, has a Use Scope of Sample, is active, and at least one of the following is true:
- Flagged for automatic registration.
- Included in a biofield group linked from a client group in which the job's client is a member, or included in a biofield group linked from the job's cost centre. Refer to Conditions for Defaulting Biofields from Client Group and Conditions for Defaulting Biofields from Cost Centre, respectively.
Biofield scope must also be satisfied:
- Where the biofield has org-scope, then it must link to no line of business, or link to a line of business within the laboratory's lines of business.
- Where an org-scope biofield is linked, optionally, to a line of business that is associated with the current laboratory, then the org-scope biofield is viewable by users within that laboratory. Otherwise, the biofield is hidden for use. This allows for a limited list of visible org-scope biofields for a laboratory, based on the analytical tests a laboratory is able to perform. Until a laboratory is linked to one or more lines of business, all org-scope biofields associated with a line of business are hidden to the laboratory's users. Refer to Limiting User Visibility of Biofields by Line of Business.
A biofield with a Biofield Type of List must have biofield values with matching descriptions to provide the user with a populated drop-down selection list of values.
