Searching for Samples that Require Validation
Validation is a process in which results, samples and jobs are reviewed and stamped as valid for reporting.
Sample and Job Validation Scope
Production, proposal, internal and laboratory batch samples and jobs can undergo validation. These types of jobs can only have lab-scope.
Use of Job and Sample Validation
Validation is a way of certifying that the reported results are correct, and serves to give the client confidence in the laboratory.
A sample may need to undergo analysis in many different sections within the laboratory. Each of these sections analyse one or more portions of a sample to determine the results for a those schemes within their domain. After a result is entered for a sample scheme, it is validated by the operator, who validates it in context of the analytical run which contains quality control samples, such that, if the results of the quality control samples are within expected limits, then it can be assured that the results of the unknown samples in the analytical run are good also.
Sample validation allows the QC Manager or Laboratory Supervisor to consider the results of a sample across all of its sample schemes analysed by the many laboratory sections, and ultimately validate the sample.
Job validation allows the QC Manager or Laboratory Supervisor to consider the results of a job across all of its samples, and ultimately validate the job.
Job and sample validation allows QC Managers and Laboratory Supervisors to:
- Search for samples where validation is required
- Search for any samples that are tagged as having QC failures
- Release and/or validate results, if not already done at point of analysis
- Mark samples in the job as completed and validated
- Mark the job as completed and validated.
This allows the user to look more thoroughly across all tests for a sample, and across all samples in a job.
Process of Searching for Samples that Require Validation
Samples requiring validation are located using a search, often by specifying the job to which the samples belong. These samples are typically ready for validation due to all underlying sample schemes, or at least those in a specific laboratory section, being analysed and completed. Usually, validation is carried out by a user who is different to the user who released the results.
A completed sample scheme means that each underlying sample scheme analyte either has a result which is validated, or is assigned a status that bypasses the fact that the sample was listed not received, or a sample scheme analyte had insufficient sample to perform the test, or was not analysed or marked as having no result.
Effect on Validation Grid Highlighting based on Job and Sample Validation State
For each sample in the validation grid, the row is highlighted:
- Green—When the job's Validated Date is stamped and the sample's Validated Date is stamped.
- Yellow—When the job's Validated Date is not stamped and the sample's Validated Date is stamped.
- Clear—When the sample's Validated Date is not stamped.
As sample scheme analytes are validated or unvalidated, the affected rows are refreshed so that the row highlighting reflects the current state of validation.
- When one or more sample scheme analytes in the bottom grid are validated:
- If this makes the sample validated, then that sample row is highlighted yellow (sample is validated, job is not validated).
- If this makes all samples in the job validated such that the job is validated, then those sample rows are highlighted green (superseding the yellow highlighting; sample is validated, job is validated).
Effect on Validation Grid Highlighting based on Result Validation State
For each sample's result in the validation grid, the row is highlighted:
- Red—When the sample scheme analyte's Workflow Status is Completed and the Composite QC Status is Failure.
- Yellow—When the sample scheme analyte's Workflow Status is Completed and the Composite QC Status is Warning.
- Green—When the sample scheme analyte's Workflow Status is Completed and the Composite QC Status is Passed.
- Clear—When the sample scheme analyte's Workflow Status is something other than Completed.
Restrictions on Searching for Jobs and Samples that Require Validation
Only jobs that are compatible with the role of the user, user group and section are returned from a search.
The schemes that a user sees for a sample during sample and job validation is limited by section, such that, the user can only see schemes that are not associated with a section, schemes that are associated with a section but that section is not associated with an access user group, or schemes that are associated with a section and that section is associated with an access user group and the user is a member of the user group. Refer to Maintaining Sections to configure the access user group for a section, and to Maintaining Schemes to configure a section for a scheme.
Where no jobs display, the user may not have sufficient privileges within their role, user group or section to perform such a search.
