Troubleshooting Network Connectivity

To use a license on a License Server, the license server and any licenses installed on it must be visible to the client. The TCP/IP protocol is used by License Services in communicating between client computers and the License server, and in enabling  network-based licensing.

The following table outlines the key steps in troubleshooting a suspected network communication problem. It describes the steps required in checking the licensing configuration on the client computer, and ensuring that the License Services service is running on the server, before outlining the procedure for testing for basic network connectivity:

Is the License Server displayed in the License Manager on the client computer?

Server displayed.

  1. In the License Manager, refresh the view:

    View |Refresh.

  2. If the License server is still not displayed, go to Check 2.

Server not displayed.

  1. In the License Manager,Optionsdialog, open the Remote Servers tab:

    Tools |Remote Servers Options....

  2. Ensure that Use Remote Servers is selected.

  3. Check that the correct name or IP address of the server is listed. If not, enter the correct value, and click Apply.

  4. In the License Manager, refresh the view:

    View |Refresh.

  5. If the License server is still not visible from the client computer, go to Check 3.

Is the License Services  service running on the server?

The service is running.

  1. In the License Manager,browse toTools |Optionsand select theLicense Servicetab.

  2. Check that the Current Status is "Started".

  3. If the Current Status is "Started", but licenses are not displayed on the client computer, select the Windows Firewall tab in the Options dialog.

  4. In the Windows Firewall tab, click Add to add License Services to the Windows Firewall exceptions list.

  5. In the License Manager dialog, click Yes.

  6. In the Options dialog, click OK.

  7. In the License Manager, refresh the view:

    View |Refresh.

  8. If licenses are not displayed on the client computer, go to Check 3.

The service is not running- Current Status: is"Stopped".

  1. On the License server, In the License Manager,browse toTools |Optionsand select theLicense Servicetab.

  2. Ensure that Allow licenses to be served to clients is selected.

  3. Ensure that the Startup type: is set to "Automatic".

  4. In the License Servicetab, click Start, and confirm that Current Status changes to "Started".

  5. If the Current Status is "Started", but licenses are still not displayed on the client computer, select the Windows Firewall tab in the Options dialog, and click Add.

  6. In the License Manager dialog, click Yes.

  7. In the Options dialog, click OK.

  8. On the client computer, in the License Manager, refresh the view:

    View |Refresh..

  9. If licenses are not displayed on the client computer, go to Check 3.

Can the License Server and client computers communicate over the network?

Yes

  1. Check by pinging the server name or IP address from the client, and by pinging the client name or IP address from the server:

    • In a command window, type "Ping computer name", and press <Return> on the keyboard (replace computer name with the name or IP address of the relevant computer).

    • If replies are received from the destination computer, then basic network communication is working between the computers.

  2. Temporarily turn off the anti-virus program on the client computer.

  3. If licenses are still not displayed on the client computer, turn on the anti-virus program, and go to Check 4.

No.

  1. Check by pinging the server name or IP address from the client, and by pinging the client name or IP address from the server:

    • In a command window, type "Ping computer name", and press <Return> on the keyboard (replace computer name with the name or IP address of the relevant computer).

    • If no replies are received from the destination computer, then basic network  communication is not working between the computers.

  2. Ask your network administrator to troubleshoot the network communication problem.

License Server is still not displayed on the client computer.

Contact your Datamine dealer and provide the details from the About dialog for both the client and the server computers. If appropriate, also supply log files from both computers.
