Dongle Number not Displayed

Troubleshooting problems with the display of the dongle number

Dongle Number not Displayed

Almost all license keys are secured by a hardware device called a dongle which has an encoded number. This number is encoded into the license key which is only authenticated if the correct dongle is attached to the computer on which the license key is registered.

For a standalone computer or License Server using a licensing security device, the status bar in the License Manager displays the details of the security devices, including the dongle number and the serial number of the primary hard disk drive. If a dongle number is not displayed in the License Manager status bar, any licenses secured by a dongle will not be usable.

Compete the following checks to troubleshoot this problem:

Status/Condition

Actions/Recommendations

1

Is the dongle attached to the appropriate USB or parallel port?

Dongle not attached

  • Attach the dongle, and check the License Manager.

Dongle attached

  • Identify if there is problem with the dongle by attaching another, if available, and recheck the License Manager.
  • If the second dongle is visible contact Datamine to arrange  a replacement. Alternatively,  go to Check 2.

2

Is the port active/switched on ?

Parallel ports are listed under Ports (LPT) in the Device Manager (Windows Control Panel - System).

USB ports are listed under "Universal Serial Bus controllers". This will only indicate that some USB ports are active, not which ones.

Inactive or not known

  • If no ports, or not all ports are listed, they must be activated in the computer BIOS - consult your IT department.
  • If the port is not visible in Device Manager, but there is a cross or other symbol by its name, right-click it and select enable from the context menu. Recheck.
  • If the computer has more than one port of the correct type, try swapping the dongle to another one, and recheck.

Working

  • Ensure that the dongle drivers are installed by running the driver setup (setupdrv.exe). By default this is located here:C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Earthworks\LicenseServices\Setup.

  • Go to Check 3.

3

Is the dongle number now appearing in the status bar of the License Manager?

No

  • Run the Windows "Add Hardware" wizard (from the Windows Control Panel) and step through it, selecting "USB security device". Allow the wizard to find and install the drivers, and then recheck.
  • If the dongle is still not visible, remove it, reboot the computer and re-attach the dongle. This will trigger a plug-and-play reaction from the computer which will install the dongle. Recheck.
  • Go to Check4.

Yes

  • Check that the licenses are now validated.

The dongle number is still not displayed

Contact Datamine, providing details from the About dialog, and from any error messages. Also include a license log.
