Model Field Stope Splitting
The Stope Splitting tool in MSO post-processing allows users to subdivide larger stopes into smaller units for more practical scheduling and operational implementation.
Uses block model fields to guide the split behaviour based on value-driven conditions (such as different domains or zones).
In more detail:
Model Field Stope Splitting divides stopes based on the values of a selected block model attribute (field), rather than purely on geometric direction or fixed dimensions. This allows splitting to respond directly to geological, grade, or classification information contained in the model.
You choose this type of splitting using the Post Processing screen's Model FieldSplitting Type.
This method is useful when:
-
Stope subdivision needs to reflect changes in grade, domain, or confidence.
-
Geological boundaries are more important than geometric regularity.
-
Different parts of a stope must be treated or scheduled differently.
-
Design decisions depend on model-driven criteria rather than shape alone.
By using block model data to drive splitting, this method can produce stopes that better align with geological reality and planning requirements.
Things to watch out for:
-
Results depend heavily on the quality and resolution of the selected model field
-
Noisy or highly variable fields can lead to fragmented or irregular stopes
-
Care should be taken to choose fields that represent meaningful boundaries, not local variation
A visual review and sensible threshold selection are recommended to avoid over-fragmentation.
Activity steps
-
Create an MSO scenario and define a block model.
-
Configure other settings as required.
-
Display the Post Processing screen.
-
Check Use Stope Splitting.
-
Expand Splitting Type and select Model Field.
-
Select a block model Field to control the splitting (for example, REGION, PANEL).
-
Specify a Default value to be used in the absence of model data.
-
Define rules for each unique field value using the Hurdle table:
-
Define the minimum required stope size (Hurdle) and the resulting split Width.
-
-
Save your settings and continue defining other post-processing options.
