Managing Licenses
Topics covered:
Viewing Locally Held Licenses
To view all licenses that are held locally (on the computer you are working at), start the License Manager and the default view will provide this information.
Viewing Licenses Held on Remote Servers
If you are working on a networked computer with a remote Network License Server, all available licenses are displayed, both locally and on the remote server. If remote licenses do not appear when you start the License Manager, follow this procedure:
-
In the main menu, select Tools |Remote Servers Options...
-
In the Options dialog, Remote Servers tab, ensure that the Use Remote Servers check box is selected.
-
Click Broadcast... to attempt to establish communications with any Department or Enterprise Server on the network. Any licenses found will be displayed.
Basic Management Functions
The check-out and locking status of all licenses served from networked License Servers, and your local (Desktop) server, is displayed. The License Manager enables you to perform the basic management functions necessary for running software in a flexible way. Commands are accessed using the toolbars and menus: More...
Use of Solutions (License Groups)
Programs and modules can be grouped together so that particular groups contain the software necessary to perform a specific set of tasks. This grouping is called a solution. License Services supports two types of solution:
-
User defined - can be created and edited using the License Manager. This is only available with Solution Management.
-
License key bound - created on installation of the software license key. All components of the solution are bound to the license key. This type of solution can only be changed using a replacement license key with the same identifier.

When a program within a solution of either type is started, the license is locked at the solution level, which means that all programs and modules within the solution are locked. |

Unlocking Abnormally Locked Licenses
There are exceptional circumstances where a program is no longer in use, but the license remains locked; this can occur when the program has crashed and the normal, controlled shutdown procedure has not been followed.
If the license was served from a remote (Department or Enterprise) server, it can only be unlocked from that server, except when the license has been checked-out. A checked-out license becomes the temporary property of the checking-out computer, and management (such as resetting locks) can be performed locally. Licenses cannot be unlocked from any other computer on the network.
-
Select the locked license.
-
Right-click, and select Reset Lock from the context menu.

Resetting Checked out Licenses
In exceptional circumstances, checked-out licenses can be reset using an admin key. Likely situations include:
- A laptop with a checked-out license has been lost or destroyed.
- A mismatch exists between the license details on the server, and the client machines due to a virus or similar.
