Remote Server Options

An overview of the available options

Remote Servers Options

  • In the main menu, select either Tools |Remote Server Options, or Tools |Options.
  • Select the Remote Servers tab to view available remote servers.

Network options

To enable network licensing, select Use Remote Servers. Servers can then be added or removed using this tab.

When a remote server has been added, it can be disabled by clearing the check box by the relevant server name.

Servers can be added using an IPv4 or IPv6 format address.

More about License Services and Internet Protocol (IP) support...

If you are connecting to a server that exists on an ambiguous network (i.e. the network domain controller broadcasts each machine using both IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, you can choose which broadcast address you will use first in order to forge a connection between server and client. For example, if you select Prioritize IPv6 over IPv4 if both provided? and an IPv6 network address is listed in the table below, the 'search' for a matching address on the local area network will be performed initially by comparing any specified IPv6 address (in the table) with IPv6 addresses broadcast by the server(s) on the network. If a connection cannot be found with the specified IPv6 address, a subsequent attempt will be made using the IPv4 address that has been broadcast by the server, assuming a corrsponding IPv4 address is also specified in the table.

In addition to LAN connections using a TCP/IP protocol, you can also connect to a hosted license web server by specifying its domain name (e.g. HOSTED.LICENSES.MYDOMAIN.COM:1234). This facility is currently restricted to hosted licensing services as provided by Datamine.

To find out more about Datamine's license hosting service - contact your local Datamine representative.

During the Timeout period, you are only permitted to make a choice from the above, and click OK.
Once the Timeout period has expired, you can then Retry the connection, resetting the timeout period and allowing a further connection attempt.

Adding a Server

  1.  In the Options dialog, Remote Servers tab, select the Use Remote Servers check box.

  2. If the Local Area Network is solely IPv4 or IPv6, you can ignore the Prioritize IPv6 over IPv4 if both provided? check box. If your LAN is of a hybrid variety (that is, the network adapter of the server will broadcast both IPv6 and IPv4 variants of its address), you can choose which of these protocols you would prefer to use when specifying your server address(es) - select the check box to prioritize IPv6 or leave it disabled to use the broadcast IPv4 format address.

  3. Click New to open an edit area in the Servers box.

  4. Either type in the name of the server, or click Broadcast....to search the local network for license servers. Any servers which are found are listed in the Servers box.

  5. Enter a port number that supports 2-way network traffic (by all expected user accounts) into the Port table cell.

    • The server name uses the format: MACHINENAME:PORT. MACHINENAME can either be the server name, or IP address in either IPv4 or IPv6 (IPv4 example: 123.234.345.456, IPv6 example: 3ffe:1900:4545:3:200:f8ff:fe21:67cf).
    • The port address is optional, with a default value of 43210 being used if the port is not specified.
    • Note that the network  Port is always specified in decimal format regardless of whether an IPv4 or IPv6 address format is being specified.
    • You cannot leave the port field blank - if you attempt to clear its contents, the 43210 default will be reinstated.
  6. In the Options dialog, select Apply or OK.

  7. Several servers may be listed in the Servers box after searching the local network - select the check box by a server to select it.

You can deactivate/reactivate a listed server at any time by enabling or disabling the corresponding check box(es) on the left of the server address. Note that an attempt will be made to connect (and retrieve licenses from) all enabled remote servers during startup of License Services. The resulting license list will be grouped by each server, and server connection attempts will be made in a top-bottom list order.

Timeouts

The broadcasting timeout sets the time that the host waits for responses to a broadcast, preventing the system from 'hanging' if no response is received. This value can be adjusted to accommodate slow networks.

Connection Failure?

Common reasons for a connection failure:

  • Server name, IP address or port number incorrectly specified.

  • An IPv6 format address has been specified where the protocol is not supported by the network, or an IPv4 protocol has been specified but an IPv6 format is expected.

  • The relevant server is not broadcasting as a license server (see below).

  • Network problems are preventing a connection within the specified Timeout period.

  • The specified port is not currently configured to permit 2-way traffic for the user account(s) that are accessing it.

  • The license server is a virtual machine, not a physical machine. By default, License Services requires the provision of physical network hardware - contact your Datamine representative for guidance on using License Services on a virtual server.

  • Antivirus, anti-malware or similar local services are actively preventing a two-way connection between the source and destination machine.

  • The licensing services is no longer running on either the client or the server machine (more about License Service Options)

In most cases, the resolution is simple, but in situations involving network configuration problems, you will need to contact your Systems Administrator to ensure that you have the necessary network access rights. It is also important that the specified server name resolves to a valid machine on the network.

In the case of a connection failure, a dialog is displayed which provides the following options:

  • Disconnect from this server: no further connection requests are made.

  • Work Offline: all remote server access is disabled. A local license must be available for you to continue using Datamine applications.
